Headphone Amplifier

HP8 Headphone Amp

Our HP8 is in fact a small integrated hi fi amplifier. We use a custom wound multi-tap output transformer which provides perfect matching to virtually any headphone load. We start with a substantial mains transformer with matching power supply and two output transformers. The HP8 tops the scales at 6.5kg, giving you an idea of how much iron you get for your money!
Like our other models the HP8 has no printed circuit board and is all hard wired with top quality components. We use silver Teflon audio cable, gold plated terminals and the famous “ALPS” volume pot for sonic purity. More....

The MP3 Mini Amplifer NEW!

Broadly similar to our HP8 our new (MP 3) is a mini hi-fi amplifier uses the same chassis.
The conventional way to provide a headphone output on an amplifier is to drop the power through a resistor. This has a big problem that it provides very high source impedance (rather like a weak battery) the effect of this is to give very “Low FI” results. Ideally headphones should be driven from small high quality amplifiers.
Many headphone amplifiers use small “microchip” amps which although are a better solution still do not provide ideal matching to the wide range of headphones available. More....

LA4 MkII Pre Amplifier

Following on the success of our LA3 pre-amp we have listened to your comments and made several changes. These include: Rear connections, Lots of inputs. High and low outputs to match almost any power amp. Remote control. DC heaters for even quieter background.

We have also used the 1941 older type 6SN7 double triode as we feel these have a more fluid sound, and a reputation for a very long life. Probably the best sounding pre-amp valve ever! More....

Passive Line Pre NEW! now with remote

A great reason for using a passive pre is that your modern tuner, CD player, phono pre amp etc probably has enough output to drive your power amp(s) effectively, and you will probably be using relatively short leads. In which case you only need to control the volume, and switch the input. Nothing else.

Some years ago QUAD described the perfect amplifier as “a piece of wire with gain”. But as there is no such thing as a perfect amplifier, by default the Icon passive is perfect, as it has no flaws. More......

PS1 (phono stage)

The PS1 was created by David for his own use but became a product due to demand created at demo's and shows.
The PS1 story from David Shaw Icons founder: 'Like many people I have accumulated a sizable collection of vinyl much of which was acquired second-hand. Many of these are excellent recordings but in less than perfect condition. After trying several very good phono stages over the years I was unable to find one that would satisfy my needs. I wanted maximum musical detail, but without emphasising the imperfections through wear, clicks scratches etc. So I could listen through the vinyl medium, not to it!' The PS1 delivers just that! PS3 (phono stage)

Following on from our acclaimed PS1 phono stage which won “5 Globes” in Hi Fi World (03/2008) for its excellent sound quality, we have pushed the boundaries of valve technology even further with our new PS3 model.
To do this we have used all our expertise and experience to create a “no expense spared” phono stage which addresses all the weaknesses of more conventional designs but still retaining our “All Valve” philosophy. And amazing value!

So what’s special about the PS3? More..

Stereo 20 SE

Many people yearn for the idea of a very simple amplifier using only one output valve (or Single Ended), believing that the absence of a phase splitter and “push-pull” output stage will bring them closer to the elusive “inner detail” of music reproduction.
It is certainly true the SE amplifiers have a magical sound of their own. Our new Stereo 20 SE is no exception. Two years in design and another year the for the listening and “tweaking”, as technically SE amplifiers do not measure as well as their Push-Pull cousins, so many adjustments are made by “ear”. We believe that our new ST20SE has a truly “Golden Sound”! More......

Stereo 25

A “Basic” amplifier with simplified design, with many of the features of our £900 Stereo 40.

Designed by David Shaw, founder of Icon Audio, the Stereo 25 has all the performance you would expect from Icon Audio an amplifier which has wide bandwidth smooth dynamics and the ability to deliver very musical performance ahead of its transistor competitors. All we have done is to carefully strip away some of the more expensive features, without compromising the basic design. More......

Stereo 40 Mk II

Building a valve amplifier is relatively easy, the difficulty is getting it to “hang” together well. We use tried and tested circuits excellent transformers and have refined them further with top quality components, solid build quality and stylish looks to give amazing sound quality and performance at many times the price.

We even give you the choice of either 40 watts in Ultralinear mode or 20 watts in Triode mode (KT88) with its more relaxed sound quality. The Stereo 40 Mk II is almost like two amplifiers in one. More.....

Stereo 40 Mk III NEW!

Why does a VALVE RECTIFIER, TERTIARY TRANSFORMERS, and NO FEEDBACK make the Stereo 40 MK III so special?

Its nearly ten years since we introduced our Stereo 40, designed by David Shaw, founder of Icon Audio. During this time we have used our expertise to make other highly successful, award winning valve amplifiers, each one pure valve and hand-made such as our MB845 90w triode monoblocks. So we decided to incorporate some of our new ideas into a new ‘High End’ version of Stereo 40 whilst keeping it affordable. More.....

The New Stereo 40 MkIII

Stereo 50

Designed by David Shaw, founder of Icon Audio. Whilst our highly acclaimed Stereo 60 sets new standards for performance, our new Stereo 50 uses a circuit based upon the Leak front end of the 20/50/60 amplifiers. We chose to use the older bigger 6SN7 and 6SL7 driver valves from the early 1940’s.
These have a reputation for a richer more textured sound, reliability, and a very long life. This combination of traditional design, excellent valves, audiophile components, custom transformers, massive choke power supply with beautiful looks all adds up to a stunning combination! More......

Stereo 60

Icon Audio’s Flagship Model!
Our engineers have a combined total of 130 years experience of designing and manufacturing of valve amplifiers! We have used this expertise to create our Stereo 60. The idea is based upon the 1947 Williamson innovative concept of a low distortion high-performance amplifier.
The resulting performance is very smooth and warm but with astonishing clarity. The massive headroom provided by the high power available means that under most circumstances the output stage will be operating in Class A. More....

Stereo 300

The Smooth, detailed, fluid sound of the 300B is legendary. But often the power of some 300B designs is a little low to get the best out of modern low efficiency speakers. We designed the Stereo 300 for someone who wants 300Bs to drive “real world” speakers and listens to every thing from acoustical through to full orchestral music and rock bands.
The 300B being a low efficiency triode is very demanding of its driver stage. We use a specially developed low distortion, powerful driver circuit that gets the best out of the 300B in terms of detail and power without losing any of its magic! More....

Monoblocks

MB 25a

Twenty eight watts may not sound a great deal but couple a pair of MB25s with a quality input source and moderately efficient speakers and they are capable of illuminating your listening room with stunning rich musical sounds and uncanny presence. Yet unlike transistor amplifiers, they are completely without any harshness or listening fatigue, despite their ability to reproduce that ‘rasp’ of trumpets, that ‘edge’ to strings and inner detail of complex vocals, with real bass power if called for.
The MB 25a's combine the virtue of 300B valves and modern componentry to produce a modern classic at a sensible price! More....

The Icon Audio MB25a

MB 90

Whilst our highly acclaimed Stereo 60 sets new standards for performance, our new MB90 is a more traditional 3 stage design, the front end is based on the Leak 20/50/60 amplifiers.
We chose to use the older bigger 6SN7 and 6SL7 driver valves from the early 1940’s. These have a reputation for a richer more textured sound, reliability, and a very long life. This combination of traditional design, excellent valves, audiophile components, hard wired, no PCB, custom transformers, massive choke regulated power supply with beautiful looks all add up to a stunning combination! MB 845 NEW!

Introducing the new MB 845 amplifiers! Designed in Leicester by David Shaw, founder of Icon Audio. As valves go the 845s are the ultimate power triode! The 845 valve dates from a time (when the only way to get high power was to make valves bigger and more powerful as opposed to more efficient like the later EL84/34 KT88s. Just as the Western Electric 300B set new standards for high power and low distortion, the RCA 845 dating from about 1931 became THE definitive high power valve for audio and even radio transmitters. Surprisingly from such big amplifiers is how well they perform at low powers. Their agility and detailed texture of strings and vocals is astounding.More....

MB 150 NEW!

A very powerful, traditional design, where power, warmth and dexterity are required. Super KT 90s in Parallel Push Pull
Following on the heels of our acclaimed MB845s, our new MB150s are a 3 stage design, the front end is inspired by the Leak “TL” designs. We have used the older bigger 6SN7 driver valves from the early 1940’s. These have a reputation for a richer more textured sound, reliability, and a very long life. This combination of traditional design, excellent valves, audiophile components, hard wired, no PCB, custom transformers, massive choke regulated power supply with beautiful looks all add up to a stunning combination!
